Carrying out regular checks on certain aspects of your car will help you stay safe and over time save you money, in some circumstances considerable sums of money could be saved.

Some of these checks should be carried out on a weekly/monthly or before undertaking any long journeys, your manufactures handbook will give you more information on how to carry out certain checks for your model and the duration in which to do them.

Weekly checks car safety checks

1, Oil

Don’t check this at your own peril, it could cost thousands to replace a seized engine and you won’t have any notice of it coming until it’s too late.

So on level ground, when the car has had time to settle, locate the bonnet release leaver and open the bonnet securing it with the strut, find the dip stick and with a clean cloth take it out, wipe it with the cloth, then replace it fully, then take it out again and see if the mark in between the min and max markers.

2, Engine coolant

So this is something that in older cars can cause the car to overheat, ensuring the levels stay in-between the markers can help to prevent this from happening. Now a really important piece of information is never take the cap off when the engine has been running as the liquid with in will be hot, plus it is a pressured unit which will spit hot liquid at you

Never mix the colours when topping the container up, its is recommended that you use the correct one that the manufactures advice for better protection.

3, Hydraulic fluid

A very important one to keep an eye on as this liquid is used to brake and steer, you check it like you would the coolant, so on level ground check to see if it is in between the min and max.

Very important info – Never take the cap off and then steer or use the brakes, you may find out that the fluid will come out.

4, Tyre Safety

What are the legal limits for tyres? I will be asking this question on lessons!

They are 1.6mm across the central 3/4 for the whole circumference with no cuts and bulges.

Manufactures recommend the tyres are changes at 3mm of tread depth

5, Damaged Body Work/Lights

I would advise checking the cars body work every time you get in it to drive off, why you may ask, well what if someone has hit your car? you don’t notice and drive off, some days later you discover it, you will never find out when or where it was done.

If you discover it straight away then you may be able to check cameras and find the guilty party.
