Driving In Bad Weather

Some general tips for driving in bad weather. The biggest problem you will have when driving in rainy conditions is, if there is moisture in the car, such as you, did you get a bit wet getting into the car?  then you need to put the heaters on, you will start to get misting on the windows.

Other issue you will have is your feet and the damp on them, best way to deal with this is to dab your feet on the car mats, direct the heating onto the window screen and floor until those feet warm up and dry out.

So dealing with rain

1, Understand each of the cars ventilation settings, to de-mist quickly.

2, Learn the different wiper settings.

3, Appreciate that rain and heater fans muffle noise and compensate by making extra visual checks to ensure you spot hazards.

4, When is the last time you checked the tyre tread? what are the legal limits? if you don’t know by now, go look it up as it could cost you up to £2500 per tyre.

5, Watch out for showers in the summer, after it has been hot the oil that’s in the road surface will make it slippy.

6, Avoid pot holes, remember this “puddles cover pot holes”, they shred tyres and can cause instant deflation of tyres,

Driving in Winter

1, I always have my car serviced around September, October so that it has had all the fluid levels checked before winter hits, I would advise this to all car owners.

2, Depending on where you live or may be travelling too, think about the conditions that you may get caught up in.

3, If you live in heavy snow areas, keep an eye on weather reports, but always carry some extra equipment, such as a shovel, torch, extra blankets or clothes and some high protein food such as nuts.

4, Leave much larger separation gaps, how many seconds gap should it been wet?or icy conditions?

5, Using the highest gear in slippery conditions can help prevent the amount of power getting to the drive wheels, if they start slipping stop what you’re doing. If you are trying to move off on snow and the wheels are just slipping, drop the clutch and use a higher gear like 2 or 3 and bring the clutch up slowly like you are edging, if it starts slipping start again.

6, Start slowing down earlier, just gentle pressure on the brake, ever heard of black ice? you can’t see it but it’s there and very slippy.

Driving In Fog

1, Use the fog light when visibility fall’s because of fog to under 100 metres,

when does it become illegal to have them on?

2, Don’t use high beams as it will just look like a white wall in front of you, if you can move your dipped headlights to the ground, there is a switch in a car if it is possible to do.

3, Have the window down slightly, this will help you hear cars coming, even if you can’t see them.

4, Use the wipers/washers to help clear the screens, plus the ventilation to ensure they don’t steam up.

Driving In Bright Sunlight

This is one of the most dangerous parts of driving, the SUN, as it not only effects you but all road users around you in a different way.

1, Use your sun visors so that it cuts out as much glare as possible, but be careful not to restrict your view, they also cover the side window.

2, Wear sunglasses to help prevent the glare

3, If the sun is causing you to be so dazzled, it may be safer to pull up.

4, If the sun is behind you the oncoming traffic will have the above issue, you will have it in your mirrors so be extra careful of what is around you before moving the position of the car.

5, Take special care in spring and autumn as this is when the sun is at the lowest during the busiest times.

So all in all its about understanding the controls of the car and when to use each one, take extra care in all weather conditions and keep your focus.
